Social Justice

St. Michael’s is committed to living out our Baptismal Covenant as we care for one another and all of God’s creation. But what does this look like? How can we be advocates for those without a voice? How can we seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves? How do we care for creation and how can we be better stewards of the resources around us?

Under the umbrella of our Social Justice ministries, we have Creation Justice initiatives and Dignity & Affirming Ministries. Please take a few minutes to read below to learn more and prayerfully consider how God may be calling you to get involved in one of these ministries.

Creation Justice

Each Sunday we pray for the just and proper use of God’s Creation. Our Episcopal Church calls us to care for God’s Creation as individuals, congregations, ministries, and dioceses, with the knowledge that the poor and disenfranchised disproportionately suffer the ill effects of environmental neglect.

At St. Michael’s, we are answering the call by providing the means for parishioners to examine environmental concerns and discuss how we, as a faith community, can respond to those concerns. Education, Advocacy, and Action are the three components of our ministry.

We began our educational journey in spring 2023 with a program called Sacred Water.  Seventeen parishioners gathered weekly to learn more about this precious resource. We then completed Sacred Air – Climate and Energy in the fall of 2023 and began the 10-week Sacred Land – Food and Farming program on February 6, 2024.  Each of these programs examines an element of environmental degradation with a focus on root cause, impact, and redress.

We also took action in 2023 by participating in the Great American Cleanup, during which 30 parishioners cleaned up the area around Prospect Lake, and by adopting a section of the Santa Fe trail for cleanup. We are participating in the Great American Cleanup again on Saturday, April 27, 2024. Additionally, we held a Sunday Education Forum on April 14, and the flyer from that is linked blow. We will continue to provide opportunities to engage in action – organized by the parish or locally with like-minded partners. All are welcome to participate.

Dignity & Affirming Ministries

Every day we are called, as the prophet Micah reminds us, “to act justly and to love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.” (Micah 6:8) As Christians we are called to be repairers of the breach, to join with God and others to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world. St. Michael’s Dignity & Affirming Ministries are loosely categorized in LGBTQIA+ ministries and Race & Reconciliation Ministries.

“Faith is taking the next step, even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
